Residential Solar System: 9 Things to Know Before You Buy

A rooftop solar system is a 25-year decision, so the few weeks you spend before signing matter more than almost any other part of the process. The hardware is broadly standardised now, which means the quality of your purchase comes down to the details: warranties, design choices, and who installs it. Here are nine things worth understanding before you commit.
1. There are two different warranties
People often hear "25-year warranty" and assume the whole system is covered for 25 years. It is not.
- Product warranty covers manufacturing defects in the panel itself, usually around 10 years.
- Performance (output) warranty guarantees the panel will still produce a minimum amount of power, typically around 25 years.
Both matter. Ask for them in writing and confirm they come from the manufacturer, not just the installer.
2. Panels degrade slowly, and that is fine
No panel stays at 100% forever. A good module loses roughly 2 to 2.5% of output in its first year, then around 0.7 to 0.9% per year after that. By year 25, a quality panel should still deliver about 80% of its original rating. When you compare quotes, compare the guaranteed degradation curve, not just the headline wattage.
3. The inverter will not last as long as the panels
The inverter is the workhorse that converts DC from the panels into usable AC. It typically carries a shorter warranty, often around 5 years, because it does more work and contains more electronics. Budget for the possibility of one inverter replacement over the life of the system, and pick a brand with reliable local service.
4. The angle of your panels is not a small detail
Tilt and orientation have a real effect on how much energy you harvest. A correctly angled array can produce noticeably more than a poorly angled one over a year.
- Set the tilt close to your location's latitude for the best year-round average.
- Adjusting the angle seasonally, even twice a year, can add a few percent to annual output.
- Avoid any orientation that puts panels in shade during peak sun hours.
5. Shade is the silent killer of output
A single shaded panel can drag down a whole string in some configurations. Before installation, the site should be assessed for shadows from water tanks, parapets, trees, and neighbouring buildings across the day and across seasons. Half-cut and modern panel designs handle partial shade better, but good layout beats clever hardware every time.
6. Your installer's track record matters more than the brand
Panels from reputable manufacturers are all broadly reliable. The biggest variable in real-world performance is workmanship: mounting, wiring, earthing, and waterproofing. Choose an installer with a multi-year track record (ideally several years of continuous operation) so they will still be around to honour service commitments.
7. Size the system to your consumption, not your roof
Bigger is not automatically better. Oversizing wastes capital; undersizing leaves you still paying the DISCOM. As a rule of thumb in India, 1 kW generates around 4 to 4.5 units a day. Map your annual unit consumption against that before deciding capacity.

8. Net metering and approvals are part of the deal
The savings only work if your system is connected through net metering, which lets you export surplus power and draw it back later. This requires DISCOM approval, a feasibility check, and a bidirectional meter. A good installer handles this paperwork for you rather than leaving it on your plate.
9. Plan how you will pay before you fall for a quote
The central subsidy can bring a typical home system down significantly, but it is credited after commissioning, so you pay up front first. If the lump sum is a stretch, solar loans let the monthly savings effectively offset the EMI. Decide your financing route early so it does not stall the project later.
