A solar panel subsidy is, put simply, the government paying for part of your rooftop solar system so you don't have to. It is the single biggest reason rooftop solar has gone from a luxury to a sensible household decision. This guide breaks down what the subsidy is, how much you can claim, and the conditions you need to meet — without the jargon.

What exactly is a solar panel subsidy?

When you install a grid-connected rooftop solar system, the central government provides Central Financial Assistance — a direct cash incentive credited to your bank account after your system is commissioned. It is delivered through the National Portal for Rooftop Solar under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

The subsidy lowers your upfront cost. It does not change how the panels work, how much power they make, or your net-metering credits — those benefits sit on top of the subsidy.

How much subsidy can you claim?

The amount is tied to your system's capacity, calculated per kilowatt and then capped. Here is the approximate 2026 structure for residential systems. Treat these figures as indicative — the portal publishes the authoritative numbers and rules can be revised.

The logic: Rs 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, plus Rs 18,000 for the 3rd kW. Beyond 3 kW the central subsidy stops increasing, which is why a 3 kW system is the most popular choice for families wanting maximum value.

On top of this, some states offer their own additional incentives. Homeowners in Gujarat and Rajasthan, for instance, have at times been able to stack a state top-up over the central amount — your installer can confirm what is currently live in your area.

Who qualifies?

To claim the subsidy you generally need to:

  • Be a residential consumer with a valid electricity connection.
  • Own the roof or have permission to install on it.
  • Choose a grid-tied system — off-grid and standalone battery systems are not eligible.
  • Use a vendor registered on the national portal.
  • Complete net metering with your DISCOM.

Why grid-connected systems only?

The subsidy exists to feed clean power into the grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. A grid-connected system lets you export surplus electricity and earn credits through net metering, which is central to the scheme's purpose. Off-grid systems with batteries serve a different need (backup during outages) and fall outside this particular incentive.

A realistic example

Say you install a 3 kW system. The gross cost might be in the region of Rs 1.8–2.2 lakh depending on equipment and location. After the roughly Rs 78,000 central subsidy — and any applicable state top-up — your net outlay drops substantially, and the system typically pays for itself in around 3–5 years through bill savings. The panels then keep generating for 25 years or more.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Oversizing past the cap without a clear reason — you pay full price for capacity above 3 kW with no extra central subsidy (though it may still make sense if your consumption is high).
  • Using an unregistered installer, which can disqualify your claim.
  • Skipping net metering, which is required and also unlocks export credits.
