Not all solar panels are the same, and in India the right choice depends on your roof space, your budget, and how much heat and dust your location throws at the array. The good news is that every mainstream panel type now lasts around 25 years, so the decision is really about efficiency and value per square foot. This guide compares the panel technologies you will actually be offered in 2026.

The mainstream choices

Monocrystalline

Made from a single silicon crystal, mono panels deliver high efficiency (18 to 22%) and a clean black look. They generate more power per square foot, which makes them ideal when roof space is limited. They cost more per watt but often work out efficient overall.

Mono PERC

Mono PERC adds a reflective rear layer that captures light the cell would otherwise miss. The result is strong efficiency at a more moderate price than premium mono. For most Indian homes this is the practical sweet spot of performance and cost.

Polycrystalline

The older, more affordable option, built from multiple silicon fragments. Efficiency is lower (14 to 17%), so you need more roof for the same output, but the lower cost per watt still appeals where space is not a constraint.

The newer, higher-output options

TOPCon

A next-generation cell design pushing efficiency above 22%. TOPCon panels squeeze more energy from the same footprint and tend to perform better in low light and high heat, useful in much of India. They sit at the premium end of the price range.

Bifacial

Bifacial panels generate from both the front and the back, capturing light reflected off the surface beneath them. On a bright, reflective surface or an elevated mount, they can add anywhere from 5 to 30 percent extra generation. They shine on ground mounts and large rooftops with good rear clearance.

Half-cut cell panels

Here each cell is cut in half, which lowers internal resistance and improves performance under partial shade and high temperatures. If your roof catches some shadow during the day, half-cut designs lose less output than conventional ones.

Thin-film

Lightweight and flexible, thin-film handles heat well and suits unusual surfaces, but its lower efficiency means it needs far more area for the same power. It is a niche pick rather than a default for Indian homes.

How to choose for your situation

A few simple rules cover most decisions:

  • Limited roof, high bill: go for high-efficiency monocrystalline or TOPCon to fit more capacity in less space.
  • Plenty of roof, tight budget: Mono PERC or polycrystalline give the best rupees-per-watt value.
  • Hot or partially shaded site: half-cut or TOPCon handle heat and shade better.
  • Ground mount or reflective roof: bifacial can meaningfully lift your annual yield.

Whatever you pick, remember the system-level basics: 1 kW generates roughly 4 to 4.5 units a day in India regardless of brand, the panels should carry a performance warranty near 25 years, and a quality installation matters as much as the panel itself.
