How Much Does a Home Solar System Cost?
Prices depend on system size, panel quality and your roof, but here are typical 2026 ranges before subsidy.

- ₹5,000–₹10,000 a month: consider 5–8 kW.
- ₹10,000 and above: 8–10 kW is often the right range.
A rough rule of thumb is that 1 kW of capacity needs about 60–80 square feet of unshaded roof and generates roughly 4–4.5 units per day in much of India. Your installer should confirm this with a proper site survey, factoring in shading, roof orientation and your future consumption, such as a new EV or air conditioner.

A well-sized system can cut your electricity bill by 70%–90%. For example, a household paying around ₹8,000 a month could see bills fall to roughly ₹1,000–₹2,000. With net metering, the surplus you export earns credit against the power you draw at night. On-Grid, Off-Grid or Hybrid?
Once you have a sense of size, decide how your system connects:
- On-grid (grid-tied): the most common and most affordable choice for homes. It uses net metering to export surplus power and draw from the grid at night. There is no battery, so there is no backup during a power cut.
- Off-grid: fully independent with battery storage, suited to remote homes without reliable grid access. It costs more because of the batteries.
- Hybrid: combines grid connection with a battery, giving you net-metering savings plus backup during outages. It is the priciest option but increasingly popular in areas with frequent cuts.
For most urban homes with a stable supply, an on-grid system gives the best return. If power cuts are common in your area, a hybrid setup is worth the extra cost for the peace of mind it brings.
Maintenance and Lifespan
A home solar system is refreshingly low-maintenance. The main task is keeping the panels clean, since dust and bird droppings reduce generation. A wash every few weeks, more often in dusty seasons, keeps output healthy. Beyond that, an occasional check of the inverter, wiring and mounting bolts is usually all that is needed. With this light care, quality panels keep producing for 25 years or more, and the inverter, which has a shorter life, may need replacing once during that span.
Choosing the Right Equipment
For homes, monocrystalline panels are usually the best fit because they deliver high output from limited roof space. Pair them with a reliable inverter and a sturdy mounting structure rated for your local wind conditions. Insist on MNRE-listed, IEC-certified components, both for performance and to keep your subsidy valid.
